The closed and controlled hydroponic NFT system circulates the irrigation water, reducing the water consumption by 95% compared to conventional farming. In the greenhouse your plants will be soaking up the sunlight, using the most efficient and cost effective energy source there is.

Green Automation has introduced two growing systems: one optimized for baby leaf production and one for living lettuce production.

Baby Leaf Lettuce – Fully Automated System

This system is designed for baby leaf production and feature a fully automated process from seeding to harvest that does not require any direct manual interaction with plants or gutters. The system offers an optional mixing system.
The individual steps of the systems can be reviewed below in the Tab “Fully Automatic”.

Living Lettuce – Automated System

This system is optimized for head lettuce production and utilizes a highly efficient plant tray-table, a single transplanting process and a 75mm wide growing gutter that allows for the use of multiple types of growing media.

The Green Automation solutions are developed to face the extreme conditions in the greenhouse environment. All the construction components are manufactured from the highest  quality stainless and hot dip galvanized steel and anodized aluminum with excellent corrosion resistance.

The automated systems are controlled by industrial programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), which represents the latest technology available. The use of PLC’s enables our accomplished engineers the opportunity to design and customize the growing system based the needs and visions the grower may have.

TECHNOLOGY

Sowing

The production of lettuces and herbs starts with sowing. We offer a wide range of tailored solutions to fit the specific needs of our customers.

Pots or gutters, where the plants will be grown in the final stages, are filled with substrate and seeds. Then they are irrigated and treated for biological pest control. Typically our systems use peat, rockwool or cellulose as a growing substrate and we are continuously testing for alternative substrates that offer advantages to the grower.

Germination room

After the preliminary steps the sowing trays are moved to the germination room. The germination room is a climate controlled space which has systems for humidity, heating and cooling control which provides a perfect environment for seeds to germinate and grow before moving them to nursery tables in the greenhouse.

Nursery tables

The trays on the tables are irrigated from overhead with moving irrigation booms. These booms are regulated by our control system with several parameters like time, heat, radiation etc. From the days following germination, on the plant tables, plants grow strong roots and are ready to be transplanted to the hydroponic NFT system. Transplanting to the gutters is done simply by moving plants to gutters with a simple tool. After transplanting the empty trays are washed with a tray washing machine and used again.

Hydroponic growing line

In the hydroponic growing system the gutters with plants are moving automatically from end to end. As the plants grow, the distance between gutters increases automatically according to the requirement of space that plants need during the growing phase. While the plants are receiving optimal growing conditions and sunlight, huge improvements in space efficiency are realized in the overall production. This means that the same amount of plants can be grown in smaller greenhouses thus reducing energy consumption and investment costs or boosting performance and efficiency of greenhouse with similar size.

Plants are moving automatically which makes production more predictable and material flow more constant and manageable. We are creating a more stable growing environment for plants by controlling relevant variables with precision.

Irrigation system

Plants are irrigated and fertigated automatically by our control system. In the irrigation system the water is dosed to the gutters from pressure compensated drip emitters. Water flows from the gutters to the circulation water tanks, which are placed under the growing lines. Using this kind of smart irrigation system we make sure that plants get the correct amount of both water and nutrients. All water that is not consumed by plants is cleaned, returned to water tanks and then reused for irrigation. Therefore our system can save water and nutrients compared to open field farming. Thanks to a powerful yet robust filtration system the quality of water stays higher.

Harvesting and packing

After the growing process the plants have moved from beginning of the growing line to the end of the system and are ready to be harvested. Harvesting takes place at the end of each line. Harvested lettuces can be packed into cartons or plastic boxes. Or the grower may wish to use an optional conveyor to transport harvested lettuces to a centralized packing station. Waste from gutters can then be transported to a centralized waste container.

After a gutter is emptied, it is placed to an automatic gutter washing machine which is located under the packing table. After a gutter is cleaned, it is placed in the gutter wagon to be returned to the transplanting area to be reused. There new plants are transplanted and the growing cycle starts from the beginning.

Harvesting and packing

After the growing process the plants have moved from beginning of the growing line to the end and are ready to be harvested. Gutters are transported by conveyors to a centralized packing station where harvesting is done automatically. Manual labour is minimized and harvested product can easily be stored and transported to stores. It’s simple as that!

Mixing

The system can be equipped with an integrated mixing system located after the cutting machine. Mixing station can handle for up to 5 different varieties and the mixing recipes can easily be set up and changed during daily operations. Mixing station is equipped with conveyors for moving harvested crop and mixed end products to the packing area.

Gutter maintenance system

After harvesting, used substrate is removed from gutters and waste is transported to container. Next the gutter is washed and disinfected with the automatic gutter washing. After the gutter is cleaned, it is reused by the automatic sowing unit and the growing cycle repeats from the beginning. Gutters travel through the entire growing system without the touch of a single human hand!
